Highway numbers in the United States are not arbitrary labels. Two overlapping systems each encode direction and rough geographic position, and knowing the conventions makes an unfamiliar number readable.
Odd and even indicate direction
In both major systems, routes running broadly north to south carry odd numbers and those running east to west carry even numbers.
That single convention tells a driver the orientation of a road before anything else is known about it, which is why signs pair the number with a direction rather than a destination.
Routes that curve substantially keep their designation, so a signed direction can differ from the compass heading at a given point.
The two systems count in opposite directions
The older US route network numbers upward from north to south and from east to west, so its low numbers sit along the northern and eastern edges.
The Interstate system, built later, deliberately reversed both, numbering upward from south to north and from west to east.
The reversal was chosen to avoid confusion between a US route and an Interstate carrying the same number in the same area, since both networks coexist across the country.
Major routes take multiples of five
Within the Interstate system, numbers ending in zero or five are reserved for the principal long-distance corridors crossing the country.
Those routes function as the backbone of the network, and the intervening numbers are assigned to shorter or regional routes between them.
The pattern lets a driver infer that a route is likely to be a major cross-country corridor before consulting any map.
Three digits mark auxiliary routes
A three-digit Interstate number relates to the two-digit route in its final pair of digits, indicating a spur, loop or bypass connected to it.
An even first digit conventionally denotes a route that rejoins its parent, such as a beltway, while an odd first digit denotes a spur that does not.
Because the same three-digit number can be reused in different states, such routes are identified by state as well as by number.
The conventions are guidelines, not rules
Numerous exceptions exist, created by routes that were extended, rerouted or renumbered after the original assignment.
Some designations were chosen for local or promotional reasons, and a few violate the direction convention outright.
The system is best read as a strong pattern with documented exceptions, which is still enough to make most numbers informative at a glance.
